TUSCALOOSA –
For the second time in three years, University of Alabama
golfer Joseph Sykora has won the Alabama state match play
championship.
Sykora, who will be a senior on the Crimson Tide golf team
this fall was playing in the 7th State Match Play
Championship at FarmLinks Golf Club in Sylacauga. He made
six birdies in a row in the final match to claim the title.
The Daphne native defeated Harvin Groft of Florence 7 and 5
in the final to win. In the semifinals he defeated Hoover’s
John Darby in 19 holes and in the quarterfinal he beat
Brewton’s Robbie Cotton in 19 holes. Sykora made nine
birdies in the semifinal, including eight in a row in his 13
holes of play. He won the Alabama Match play championship in
2005 as well.
